Fine Antique Art Large Oil Painting On Canvas of Horses In A Countryside Landscape Equestrian Pictures After Artist George Stubbs (1724-1806) Decorative Swept Gilt Frames
I am delighted to offer this huge oil acrylic oil painting on canvas of wild horses in a rural landscape beautifully executed in the style of similar works by the famous equine artist George Stubbs.
-
The painting is of good quality featuring a very popular subject matter which will appeal to a wide audience and is extremely well painted by a very competent English artist who has signed in the llower right bottom corner as P.English.
-
ABOUT ARTIST GEORGE STUBBS (1724-1806 )
Stubbs was born in Liverpool, the son of a currier, or leather-dresser, John Stubbs, and his wife Mary.
Stubbs worked at his father's trade until the age of 15 or 16, at which point he told his father that he wished to become a painter.
-
Stubbs subsequently approached the Lancashire painter and engraver Hamlet Winstanley, and was briefly engaged by him in a sort of apprenticeship relationship, probably not more than several weeks in duration.Having initially demonstrated his abilities and agreed to do some copying work, Stubbs had access to and opportunity to study the collection at Knowsley Hall, the estate where Winstanley was then residing
-
Thereafter as an artist he was self-taught. He had had a passion for anatomy from his childhood,[2] and in or around 1744, he moved to York, in the North of England, to pursue his ambition to study the subject under experts.
-
In 1754 Stubbs visited Italy.Forty years later he told Ozias Humphry that his motive for going to Italy was, "to convince himself that nature was and is always superior to art whether Greek or Roman, and having renewed this conviction he immediately resolved upon returning home".
-
In 1756 he rented a farmhouse in the village of Horkstow, Lincolnshire, and spent 18 months dissecting horses, assisted by his common-law wife, Mary Spencer. He moved to London in about 1759 and in 1766 published The anatomy of the Horse.
The original drawings are now in the collection of the Royal Academy.
-
Even before his book was published, Stubbs's drawings were seen by leading aristocratic patrons, who recognised that his work was more accurate than that of earlier horse painters such as James Seymour, Peter Tillemans and John Wootton. In 1759 the 3rd Duke of Richmond commissioned three large pictures from him, and his career was soon secure.
-
By 1763 he had produced works for several more dukes and other lords and was able to buy a house in Marylebone, a fashionable part of London, where he lived for the rest of his life.
-
His most famous work is probably Whistlejacket, a painting of a prancing horse commissioned by the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, which is now in the National Gallery in London. This and two other paintings carried out for Rockingham break with convention in having plain backgrounds.
-
Throughout the 1760s he produced a wide range of individual and group portraits of horses, sometimes accompanied by hounds. He often painted horses with their grooms, whom he always painted as individuals.
-
He remained active into his old age. In the 1780s he produced a pastoral series called Haymakers and Reapers, and in the early 1790s he enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of Wales, whom he painted on horseback in 1791.
-
Stubbs's died at the age of 81 on 10 July 1806, in London.
-
Stubbs had a son George Townly Stubbs who became an engraver and printmaker.
-
DATELINE
This painting in our opinion dates somewhere upwards possibly from the 1950's- 1960's latest based on the frame design and is thought to be at least 60 years of age.

The antique gilt and plater frame is a good example in excellent condition and really makes the picture look stunning.

Fine Antique Art Important Surrealist Oil Paintings Manner of Lucien Coutaud (1904-1977) 20thc French Oil Portraits Gilt Frames
A distinguished study closely associated with works by French Surrealist Lucien Coutaud (b. Meynes 1904-d.Paris 1977)
-
A large, bold and beautiful surrealist composition depicting The Four Seasons, somewhat reminiscent of the work of Lucien Coutaud (1904-1977). There are several annotations on the stretcher bars, and the previous owner had attributed the work to Franco-Spanish artist Juana Faure, although this remains unsubstantiated.
This painting is certainly the work of an artist who did theatre decors or murals.
A very decorative and original painting full of interest and colour, truely a stunning piece.
-
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Son of a provencal goldsmith, Lucien Coutaud studied at the Beaux-Arts Academy in Nîmes from 1920, where he was a student of Armand Coussens, an excellent engraver. He moved in Paris in 1924, where he attended the free academies of Montparnasse.
-
The young Coutaud is interested in the Louvre Primitives, but also in the works of Chirico, Max Ernst and Paul Klee.
He was later admitted to the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in the same year.
-
In April 1928, he is back in Paris and in 1929 painted his first important paintings: La Bicyclette, Female and Soldier, Soldiers arresting a spy, Young Girl with three wheels. In 1930 he produced his first etchings, drypoint on zinc : Rhineland Souvenir, Three Amazons, The Cyclist, The Morning. He enters into relationship with the writer Jean Blanzat.
-
In 1931, the Quatre Chemins gallery in Paris organized his first solo exhibition. In 1932, he worked almost exclusively with gouache, painting many bouquets of flowers and large esoteric compositions. He also creates stage sets and costumes for Le Chateau des Papes.
-
He attended many events of the avant-garde group, alongside the surrealists. During these years he affirms his graphic style, close to surrealism, through the use of an unusual imaging where dreams and reality intertwine.
-
The characters represented in his paintings lose their flesh, reduced to the state of skeletons, then fragmented and deprivated of faces in the manner of mannequins or robots, only retaining their sexuality to keep a track of humanity. Reformed, he created sets, costumes for the theater, tapestries revives engraving.
-
His figurative style, evolving into oneiric abstraction, is close to surrealism, presenting with southern colors the bullfighting poetry, the drama of death. This painter-poet who was a friend of Jean Blanzat, Fraigneau, Marc Bernard, Jean-Louis Barrault, Oscar Dominguez, Paul Eluard, Picasso, Jacques Prévert, Boris Vian, Gilbert Lely, Jean Paul Sartre, Yves Tanguy, and Félix Labisse never ceased to assert his independence. Lucien Coutaud invented Éroticomagie, which is a painting of a world centered on an individual and his metamorphosis, but always with a sexual connotation, like the impressive series of "Taureaumagies" or the "Swans-People". The Éroticomagie is a carnal and dreamlike fusion of Eros and magic, a reflection of his inner world.
-
The painter's world, which he delivers through his paintings of dream fragments is completed steps by steps over them time. The artist paints indeed various subjects that populate his imagination: "Characters, vegetable and mineral houses, metamorphoses, large tracts of land and irons." He then appropriates these issues and transpose them into another poetic reality.

Snowdonia Landscape North Wales By John Baragwanath King Edwardian Oil Painting
I am pleased to offer for sale this huge and beautifully toned, autumnal landscape watercolour and gouache by the artist John Baragwanath King, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.

The location is considered to be a lake view near Snowdonia in North Wales with the famous mountain range depicted in the background.
-
SNOWDON is the highest mountain in Wales, at an elevation of 1,085 metres above sea level, and the highest point in the British Isles outside the Scottish Highlands.
It is located in Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd.
-
SNOWDONIA (Welsh: Eryri) is a mountainous region in north west Wales and a national park of 823 square miles (2,130 km2) in area. It was the first to be designated of the three national parks in Wales, in 1951.
-
There is a tranquil lake, with a boathouse with several boats moored alongside and smoke issuing from its chimney and a snow-capped mountain in the distance.
There is a road or track alongside the edge of the lake and, in the distance, what appears to be a horse-drawn charabanc or bus, with people on the top deck looking at the lake.
There were such charabancs in the Lake District in the Edwardian period, taking tourists around the lakes.
-
ABOUT THE ARTIST
JOHN BARAGWANATH KING 1864-1939, was born at Phillack, near Hayle in Cornwall. He originally trained as an engineer, but gave it up to become an artist. He painted principally in watercolours, but painted some oils, mostly marines and coastal scenes. He lived with his wife Helen, (nee James) and eventually their daughter Gladys Baragwanath in St. Austell in Cornwall, but maintained a studio at 55 Connaught Avenue, Plymouth, Devon. He exhibited 1903-1914, 1 painting at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and 48 at the Baillie Gallery. He also exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Florence, and Berlin.
-
Apart from his artistic career, he was an authority on Cornish history and was made a Bard in 1930. He took as his Bardic name Baragwanath, which means 'wheaten bread' in Cornish. He died at his home Westbourne, St. Austell, Cornwall on 15th April, 1939.
-
One of his paintings was purchased by Queen Alexandra and then further works by King Edward VII. We have read on google that he fell out of favour, after selling one of his paintings to Kaiser Wilhelm just prior to WWI, but how accurate this is, we do not know.
-
He also published 'Arthur and Others in Cornwall' and other works.
-
His biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists, by The Collectors Club and The Dictionary of British Artist by Grant M. Waters.
-
FRAME
The painting is framed in a 2 1/2" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Oil Portrait Painting Of David & Goliath After Old Master Religious Artwork Oil On Canvas Gilt Frame
Large Acrylic Oil On Canvas Of David and Goliath all beautifully hand painted by professional hand and set within the original decorative Gilt Frame.
-
Goliath is described in the biblical Book of Samuel as a Philistine giant defeated by the young David in single combat. The story signified Saul's unfitness to rule, as Saul himself should have fought for the Kingdom of Israel.
-
The phrase "David and Goliath" has taken on a more popular meaning, denoting an underdog situation, a contest where a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary.

Moseley Pool Autumn River Landscape 19thc Oil Painting By Mary Groves
We are offering this lovely oil on canvas by the artist Mary Groves, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.and entitled on the edge of the stretcher 'Moseley Pool'.
-
The painting depicts the bank of the pool, with the waters reflecting the trees to the right in resplendent autumnal colours.
-
LOCATION
Moseley Park and Pool is part of the former estate of Moseley Hall, which was rebuilt in 1792-6 - the park being designed by Humphrey Repton.
-
The estate began to be split up for housing in the second half of the 19th Century and the portion that is now the park was split from the rest by a road and some local landowners formed the Moseley Park and Pool Company Ltd. in 1898 to protect the land from further development.
-
The land amounts to the lake and eleven acres. In 2006, the limited company was converted to a charitable Trust and is now run by volunteer trustees, access being on an annual membership basis.
-
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mary Groves was born in Farnham, Surrey in the second quarter of 1854. She studied at Lambeth School of Art, Miller's Lane, where she won a bronze medal in 1883 and later at the Royal Academy Schools.
In the census of 1891, she was living with her widowed mother at 58 Jeffery’s Road, Clapham, London and is listed as an artist painter and living on her own means.
In 1901, at the age of 47, she is living at the same address with her brother and his wife, again listed as an artist. By 1911, she is still living with her brother, but at 1 Sibella Road, Clapham, London SW.
-
(As her sisters-in-law came from Birmingham, this may be how she came to paint the Moseley pool.) We can find no trace of her death date, but, as she wasn't listed in the 1939 Register, we believe it to be in the early to mid thirties.
-
EXHIBITIONS
In 1906, she has a joint exhibition at the Dore Gallery in London, where it was commented that Miss Mary Groves 'exhibits several commendable studies of picturesque old buildings in Belgium'.
-
A photogravure of her RA exhbiited paintings 'Sing unto the Lord', was offered for sale by the Illustrated London News for 4 guineas for Artist's Proofs and 1 guinea for prints.
-
There are 3 of her paintings in the National Collection, 2 held by Isle of Wight Council and 1 'Impudent Hussies' by St. Helens Council.
-
FRAME
The painting is framed in a 2 3/4" antique gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
-
