......................................................

A well painted William IV period oil portrait of Mary Queen of Scots depicted reclined in her chair.
>
MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (8 December 1542 – 8 February 1587), also known as Mary Stuart[3] or Mary I of Scotland, was Queen of Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567 and Queen consort of France from 10 July 1559 to 5 December 1560.
>
Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He ascended the French throne as King Francis II in 1559, and Mary briefly became queen consort of France, until his death in December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, arriving in Leith on 19 August 1561. Four years later, she married her first cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, but their union was unhappy. In February 1567, his residence was destroyed by an explosion, and Darnley was found murdered in the garden.
>
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, was generally believed to have orchestrated Darnley's death, but he was acquitted of the charge in April 1567, and the following month he married Mary. Following an uprising against the couple, Mary was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle. On 24 July 1567, she was forced to abdicate in favour of James, her one-year-old son by Darnley. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain the throne, she fled southwards seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I of England. Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics, including participants in a rebellion known as the Rising of the North. Perceiving her as a threat, Elizabeth had her confined in various castles and manor houses in the interior of England. After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth, and was subsequently executed.

HIGHLAND CATTLE OIL PAINTING BY WILLIAM LANGLEY 19TH CENTURY LANDSCAPE.CATTLE WATERING RIVER & Mountains
We are delighted to offer for sale this tranquil and evocative oil on canvas by the artist WILLIAM LANGLEY, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a scene of Loch Awe and its surrounding mountains, with a group of three shaggy, highland cattle watering near the banks. Loch Awe is a very large freshwater loch in Argyll and Bute on the west coast of Scotland.
-
WILLIAM LANGLEY, who flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century, was a prolific landscape painter, primarily in oil, who specialised in coastal beach scenes, highland scenes usually with cattle and rural landscapes. Surprisingly, for such a prolific painter, little is known about his life, which leads us to the conclusion that his name is a pseudonym. He is frequently confused with the West Country artist Walter Langley and the dates given for him are often the same i.e. 1852-1922. However, this is incorrect. We have also seen it put forward that this is one of the pseudonyms used by Daniel Sherrin, but we cannot confirm this.
-
The fact that our reference books do not list this artist also points to it being a pseudonym or that he did not exhibit his work, but we have found one written biography in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents', which we quote below:
-
'Painter in oil of rural landscapes and coastal scenes who was working in the early 1900s. The subjects of this prolific artist included views in Cornwall, the South of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Among the titles of known works are 'On the Lledr', 'Wee Bridge, Killarney', 'In the Glen', and 'Sunshine after Rain, a Village in the Thames'. The work shows a distinct simarity to that of several artists working at the time and the signature could possibly be a pseudonym. The pictures are often large and decorative and have become increasingly popular in recent years.'

Oil Portrait Painting Chelsea Pensioners David Haddon
> RESERVED <
-
We are delighted to offer for sale a sought after oil painting on canvas of two Chelsea pensioners by artist David W. Haddon Exhibited 1884-1911.
-
HISTORY OF THE CHELSEA PENSIONERS
A Chelsea pensioner is an in-pensioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a retirement home and nursing home for former members of the British Army located in Chelsea, London. Historically, however, the phrase applied more widely, referring to both in-pensioners and out-pensioners.
-
IN-AND OUT-PENSIONERS
During the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II, the Royal Hospital was still under construction, so they introduced a system for distribution of army pensions in 1689. The pension was to be made available to all former soldiers who had been injured in service, or who had served for more than 20 years.
-
By the time the Hospital was completed, there were more pensioners than places available in the Hospital. Eligible ex-soldiers who could not be housed in the Hospital were termed out-pensioners, receiving their pension from the Royal Hospital but living outside it. In-pensioners, by contrast, surrender their army pension and live within the Royal Hospital.
-
In 1703, there were only 51 out-pensioners. By 1815 this figure had risen to 36,757.
-
The Royal Hospital remained responsible for distributing army pensions until 1955, following which the phrase "out-pensioner" became less common, and "Chelsea pensioner" was used largely to refer to "in-pensioners".
-
LIFE OF IN-PENSIONERS
Upon arrival at the Royal Hospital, each in-pensioner is given a "berth" in a ward, a small room (9 feet x 9 feet) on a long corridor, and is allocated to a company. In-pensioners surrender their army pension, in return receiving board, lodging, clothing and full medical care.
-
The size of the hospital berths has increased over time. There are 18 berths to a ward.
-
CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION AS AN IN-PENSIONER.

PASTEL PORTRAIT MARIANNE ISABEL MONCRIEFF (1874-1961) BY ARTIST WOLFGANG CRAIG HAINISCH

..................................................................................................

We are offering for sale this lovely pastel and goauche portrait by the artist Wolfgang Craig Hainisch, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner.
>
The portrait depicts a lady in her later years, with a very kind face and wonderful blue eyes. She is wearing a sea-green dress with a fur coat over it and has on a pearl necklace and pearl drop earrings.
>
HISTORY
According to the previous history and provenance,it is purported to be a portrait of Scottish socialite Mrs.Moncrieff (b1874-d1961)wife of industrial glass maker John Moncrieff from Perthshire.
>
Glass was made at the Moncrieff glassworks in Perthshire, by an emigré Spanish family, from a range of glass known as “Monart”, which over the intervening years has become much more widely recognised and far more sought after.
>
The first experimental piece of Monart was made c.1923 by glassworker Salvador Ysart. Encouraged by Mrs Isabel Moncrieff, wife of glassworks owner John, and named after "Mon" from Moncrieff and “art” from Ysart, production began soon after.
>
Subsequently helped by Salvador's sons Paul, Vincent, Augustine and Antoine, it continued until 1961 – albeit interrupted by the war and, from 1946, without Salvador and two of his sons, who left to make their own and similar “Vasart” glass.
>
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Wolfgang Craig Hainisch was born in Austria on 27th September 1905.
How he came to England is not known, although it is variously stated on the internet that he was a Prisoner of War in WWI.
>
This would not make sense, however, as he would have been too young to have seen service in the war.
>
It would be more realistic that he was interned, probably with his parents, as we have seen strong evidence that he was in a camp on the Isle of Man and there were two internment camps on the island during WWI.
>
His birth and death dates we have obtained from the Births, Marriages and Deaths records, which also show that he died in the Westminster district of London in 1995.
>
He was a society portrait painter in London during the 30s, 50s and 60s and it is said that he painted the King of Jordan, the Queen Mother of Jordan. He also painted the portrait of Madame Nordi, the famous ballet teacher.
>
There is one of his portraits in the National Collection, a portrait of Lady Barrett, which is in the collection of the Royal Free Hospital.
>
It is likely that many of his portraits are still in private hands, but there are a few auction results for them, including a pastel of a woman jockey.

......................................................

Alex De Andreis was a French painter of the late 19th and early 20th century.
>
Andrei's subjects were mostly genre pieces set in the 17th and 18th century costumes similar to those of Stephen Lewin.
>
His broad confident technique of painting, captures beautifully the play of light upon his images,an interpretation that is entirely original.
>
Both the colour and atmosphere of his canvases come alive, giving his figures a natural environment in which to cast their spell.
>
Whether tavern interiors, figures playing chess or caverliers admiring a nes acquisition,Alex De Andreis fires the imagination with his images of bygone age and presents us with highly decorative images which in today's market,as in the artist's day,are very collectable.
>
We are pleased to offer for sale a very detailed example of one of his works in print form under glass dating from the late 19th century in a later frame.
All in good clean condition and ready to hang.
