OLD LIONS HEAD MADE FOR FILM SET
A fine example of a hand made Lilons Head which is tremendously realistic.Made to wall hand, this was probably produced for a film set and is believed to be a one off example.

A chance to buy something unusual as a real Lion is a protected species and so this copy makes an excellent alternative to the real thing without causing any harm

The approximate size is about 2 ft x 2 ft and is fairlly light in weight and has a steel loop ready to hang. This piece is quite old but in good condition.

Waldburg-Zeil was a County located in southeastern Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located around Schloss Zeil, near Leutkirch im Allgäu. Waldburg-Zeil was a partition of Waldburg-Wolfegg-Zeil. Originally ruled by Truchesses (Stewards), Waldburg-Zeil was elevated to a County in 1628, and a Principality in 1803 shortly before being mediatised to Württemberg in 1806.
-
In 1674, Waldburg-Zeil was partitioned between itself and Waldburg-Wurzach. Count Francis Anthony inherited Waldburg-Trauchburg in 1772 (the districts of and Scheer were later sold to Thurn und Taxis in 1785), and Steward Froben and Steward Henry of Waldburg-Wolfegg partitioned Waldburg-Waldburg after the death of Steward Gebhard.

18thc Oil Portrait Painting of a Lady
18thc Est. (1750-70) Oil Portrait Painting of a lady wearing a satin blue bodice with cream silk bow.
-
The attractive sitter, expensively dressed and wearing pearls, the favourite jewel of the period, and a pink rose.
Her rose is pinned close to her heart and her expression is pensive. In addition to being fashionable, pearls were a symbol of purity, and the red rose symbolised love. Flowers in general also serve as a reminder of the rapid passing of time - that youth, and indeed life, is a fleeting thing. It seems likely that this charming portrait was painted for a lover...perhaps in anticipation of a marriage.

OIL PORTRAIT PAINTING OF CATHOLIC CARDINAL IN RED ROBE BY ALFRED L GRACE (1899-1954) 33.5 X 29.5 INCHES
WELCOME TO MANSION HOUSE ANTIQUES & FINE ART
.
For Immediate Enquiries Please Telephone

>
We are offering this expertly executed oil painting on canvas by the artist Alfred L. Grace, who has signed the painting A. L. Grace, as he always did, in the lower left hand corner. The artist very rarely dated his work, so we are estimating it to be early to mid 20th Century. It is just possible to read the title of the work on the back of the canvas which is 'The Cardinal in his Study'.
>
The painting depicts an elderly red-robed Cardinal in his study, seated in a leather covered and studded chair, with his feet on a round footstool, attending to the business of the Church. His assistant or secretary is a brown robed monk, who is pointing to something on a document with the end of a quill pen. The study has wood panelling and stone framed arched windows with leaded lights and some panes of bullseye glass. There is a shield shaped armorial panel near the top of the window and to the right of the large windows there are two cupboards, one with the door partially open showing that it contains books or ledgers, some of which may be on the table. There is also an hour glass on the table, as well as a candlestick and a pot with another quill pen.
>
ABOUT THE ARTIST ALFRED L GRACE
Was born in Bournemouth on the 16th February 1899. He appears to be known on some auction sites and on google as Alfred Lyndon Grace, 1867-1949, but we cannot confirm his second Christian name in any of the official documents, nor have we been able to find any people with the birth and death dates of 1867-1949. Unfortunately, inaccurate dates are very common in the auction world and once they have appeared somewhere, they are copied and recopied as if they are accurate and official.
>
We have found evidence of Alfred L. Grace, who appeared in 1911 as a boarder at a school in Bournemouth, in the 1939 National Register which has just become available online, listed as a Commercial Artist, living at 1 Stratford Studios, Kensington, London W.8. with his wife Kathleen M (nee Weeple), who has married that year. He was previously married in Chelsea in 1920 to Catherine L.(nee Dale) and, in fact, went on a cruise with her to Tangier in 1931. All of this ties up with the fact that we found an oil painting by this artist, which was sold at auction, of an original Players cigarette advertisement. He may have funded his painting by his commercial art or turned to it in later years. He died in London in the first quarter of 1954 at the early age of 54.
>
He was a painter in oils of figurative subjects, genre paintings, portraits and floral still life. Many of his paintings include cardinals, huntsmen, cavaliers, old soldiers etc. and all are painted with great attention to detail.
>
His paintings often command high prices and the record that we have found in recent years is £4,851 plus premium in the USA.
>
PROVENANCE
The painting was formerly with the Lotinga Fine Art Galleries, 57 New Bond Street, London W.1.

19thc. Portrait Col Stanley Arnold By E.Schwarz Military Officer Painting
19THC.OIL PORTRAIT COLONEL STANLEY ARNOLD BY EUGEN SCHWARZ Commanding Officer of Lancashire Royal Garrison Artillery Militia (1888 to 1904)
-
I am delighted to offer for sale this superbly executed oil portrait by the German artist Eugen Schwarz, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and inscribed the word 'London'
below his signature.
-
The provenance of the painting is by descent from the family.
-
We have confirmed the sitter is the said Colonel Stanley Arnold, as there is a smaller, but virtually identical painting of him in the Museum of Liverpool, where his title is given as 'Colonel S. Arnold Commanding Officer of Lancashire Royal Garrison Artillery Militia (1888-1904)'.
The museum lists it as being by an unknown artist, but, in our opinion it is also by Eugen Schwarz.
-
Colonel Arnold is seen in his navy blue uniform, with the artillery grenades on the collar, gilt epaulettes and a gold braid sash.
The medal Col Arnold is wearing is the Companion of the Order of the Bath (Civil division) pre-1917 breast badge.
-
EUGEN SCHWARZ Was born in May 1851 in Burgheim, Germany. He was a portraitist and studied under Ferdinand Keller in Karlsruhe and under H. Canon in Vienna. He worked in Berlin from 1896, where he died in 1904. Source Benezit.
-
Stanley Arnold was born in 1845 in Walton, Liverpool, the son of Samuel J. Arnold, a general produce broker. He had a monied background and in the census of 1871, at the age of 26, was living with his 21 year old wife Frances Elizabeth (nee Edwards) at 30 Gloucester Place, London W.1 with a butler, cook, housemaid and lady's maid.
-
He joined the Royal Lancashire Artillery as a Captain in 1872 and is shown on the Army List in 1878. The base for the Royal Lancashire Artillery was the Seaforth Barracks in Liverpool.
-
The Royal Lancashire Artillery Militia, was one of many militias throughout the country, which were incorporated in the early twentieth century into the newly formed Territorial Force.
-
By 1881 and also 1891, the family were living at Addlestrop House, Stow on the Wold in Gloucestershire and Stanley was a Lieutenant Colonel and Hon. Colonel, The Lancashire Artillery, Southern Division, Royal Artillery.
-
He was also a Justice of the Peace. The family, including his two daughters, had a multitude of servants. Addlestrop House is a beautiful mansion and a Grade II listed building, images are on google.
-
By 1901, they had moved to Barton House, Barton on the Heath, Warwickshire,a superb building, but on the 14th March,1906 Stanley Arnold died at Chipping Norton,Oxfordshire, two years after his portraitist.
-
The painting is framed in its original 5 1/2" ornate, swept gilt frame and slips and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
-
MEASUREMENTS(Including Frame) / HEIGHT 39 1/2 Inches (103cm) / WIDTH 33 1/4 Inches (84.4cm)
-
CONDITION / Very good condition commensurate with age.
There are no repairs to the canvas. There are no stretcher marks, craquelure or paint loss.
The gilt frame is original to the painting and the plaster mouldings have some signs of shrinkage with age and fine cracks as per normal. There have been some old minor repairs to the frame, but not too obvious.
-
There is a very smaller version of our quality signed original in the Liverpool National museum.

Officer Portrait Follower of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) 20th Regiment of Foot East Devonshire
PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER, BRITISH 19TH CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830)
-
We are delighted to offer this large oil painting on canvas by " Follower of " Sir Thomas Laurence
(artist) dating around c1800-1810
-
SIR THOMAS LAURENCE
-
Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA FRS (13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) was a leading English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy.
-
Lawrence was a child prodigy. He was born in Bristol and began drawing in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper. At the age of ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. At eighteen he went to London and soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oils, receiving his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790. He stayed at the top of his profession until his death, aged 60, in 1830.
-
Self-taught, he was a brilliant draughtsman and known for his gift of capturing a likeness, as well as his virtuoso handling of paint. He became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full member in 1794, and president in 1820. In 1810 he acquired the generous patronage of the Prince Regent, was sent abroad to paint portraits of allied leaders for the Waterloo chamber at Windsor Castle, and is particularly remembered as the Romantic portraitist of the Regency. Lawrence's love affairs were not happy (his tortuous relationships with Sally and Maria Siddons became the subject of several books) and, in spite of his success, he spent most of life deep in debt. He never married. At his death, Lawrence was the most fashionable portrait painter in Europe. His reputation waned during Victorian times, but has since been partially restored.

.................................................................................................................................

The painting is a half length portrait of a young officer in the 20th Regiment of Foot, the East Devonshires.
-
His hair is powdered, (the use of powder was abolished in the army in 1808) and is wearing the crescent shaped metal gorget on his chest denoting that he is an officer (gorgets were abolished in 1831).
We have researched the uniform of the 20th Foot and this appears to be correct.
-
The 20th Regiment of Foot, was raised in 1688 as Sir Richard Peyton's Regiment of Foot.
-
In 1751 it became the 20th Regiment of Foot until 1782, when its name was changed to the 20th East Devonshire Regiment of Foot and this it remained until 1881.
-
After this date it became The Lancashire Fusiliers and after 2012 it was incorporated into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
-
The painting is unsigned and the sitter unknown, however, in our opinion, the canvas is contemporary to the period of the sitter.
-
FRAME
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate, swept, gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

19thc River Landscape Painting of Waterfall By David Motley,Landscape Mountains & Caskading Stream
Description:
We are delighted to offer for sale this large and lovely oil painting on canvas by the Yorkshire artist David Motley, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a swollen burn, cascading down from the mountains, under a small bridge and becoming a waterfall, falling steeply into a rocky pool, with a mountainous backdrop. The artist has completely captured the falling water and spray in an almost photographic manner. Although we do not know the location, it is likely that it is in Scotland, a favourite subject for the artist.
-
DAVID MOTLEY Was born near Leeds in Yorkshire in 1848 and there is little information about his early life, other than that he was still living in Leeds in 1861. In 1872 he married his wife Annie, by whom he had a daughter Annie, born 1874 who became an artist and, in 1878 a son David Wilton Motley (1878-1947) who also became an artist (2 of his paintings are in the National Collection see BBC - Your Paintings under Wilton Motley). By 1881, the family were living at 126 Corbridge Street, Byker, Newcastle on Tyne, where the children were born, but had moved to Blackpool by 1891. In 1900, his wife Annie died but he and the two children were living at 69 Montgomerie Street, Glasgow. We can find no record of his death, but judging by newspaper articles, it was after 1921.
-
This is a quote from the Aberdeen Journal 9th December 1902. "Reid's Auction Rooms A collection of oils and watercolours by Mr. David Motley and his daughter Miss Annie Motley. Well known as an artist in the South and West of Scotland. When he was in Oban, he was commissioned to paint six panels in the officers' messroom of HMS Raleigh. His principal subjects are in Arran, Skye and Dumbartonshire.
-
He exhibited in York in 1884 and at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1898. There is one of his paintings in the National Collection, at The Dock Museum in Barrow in Furness. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club).
-

Pastel Portrait Brigadier General Percy Douglas Hamilton CB CMG (1867-1936) By Oliver Senior ARCA (1880-1944)
We are pleased to offer for sale this brilliantly executed half-length pastel portrait painting of Brigadier General Percy Douglas Hamilton CB CMG by the artist Oliver Senior, who has signed the painting SENIOR in the top left hand corner.
-
Percy Douglas Hamilton was born in The Cape, South Africa in 1867. By 1871, the family was living in Kensington. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gentleman Cadet on 24th December 1884. He became a Lieutenant in 1886 and a Captain in 1897. During WWI, Major Hamilton commanded the 5th Siege Battery which departed for France on 27th September 1914. By the end of January 1915, he was ordered to take command of the Harwich Garrison. Unfortunately, we have not been unable to establish his locations during the rest of WWI, and, although we were informed that he was at Gallipoli, we have been unable to verify this. Apart from the usual WWI decorations, he became a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and a Companion of the Order of the Bath and was awarded the Military Order of Savoy which is an Italian order.
-
We believe that by the end of WWI, he was a Lieutenant Colonel and Temporary Brigadier General, but was promoted to Brigadier General circa 1927. He was retired by 1934 and died on 15th May 1936, leaving his widow Adeline Diana (nee Sweeting) (1889-1964), who he had married in Marylebone in 1916.
-
Oliver Senior ARCA, 1880-1944, was born in Nottingham on 21st September 1880. He was a portrait, figure and landscape painter in oils, watercolours and pastels and an etcher, colour printer and mural painter. He studied at Manchester School of Art 1896-1903 and at the Royal College of Art in London 1903-1907, after which he travelled in France & Belgium. From 1908-1917, he taught painting at Sheffield Technical School of Art, where he taught Stanley Royle RCA RBA. He was called up into the RAF, originally the Royal Flying Corps, in 1917 and after a year in the RAF Reserve, he was discharged finally in 1920. He became an Art Teacher at Eastbourne School of Art from 1919 onwards and was still working there in 1939, so may have continued until his death in 1944. He left a widow and three children. He signed his work either SENIOR in capitals or with his monogram of an S inside an O.
-
Biographical details for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child.
-
The pastel has been newly framed in an ornate gilt frame and its original gilt slip , totalling 4", and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
