Description

Victorian Overpainted Lithograph Print Finished In Watercolour & Gouache.
-
The art of hand-colouring prints is a little-studied but distinct discipline, requiring skill and flair to be done successfully.
Typically executed in watercolour or gouache, hand-colouring increases the impact of a black-and-white image, and can transform a print into something unique and personal.
-
The example offered for sale is a lithograph on board which has been overpainted more extensively than typical hand-colouring, in watercolour and gouache [ body-colour ] meaning that this picture appears almost as a paintings in its own right.
-
Lithographs were produced as copies after many of his original oil paintings and are also very collectable, all desired by admirers of his works as they are more affordable reduced versions in small format.
-
Our example is very realistic and in the original Gilt frame and slip, dating from the late Victorian period and is in good order for the age with a little retouching to the gilt-work.
-
The picture is titled ‘ The Slave Sale ‘ which is also hand painted on the lower border and
is well preserved under glass and has original sealed backing verso.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
American listed artist, Frederick VEZIN was born in Philadelphia in 1859, and died in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1933. His original oil paintings are known to achieve very high sums at auction, especially at Christie's and Sotheby's and other international venues, ranging from mid-$50,000 US to the $160,000 and evidenced from past sales.

VEZIN is more noted for his Impressionist interiors, typically of a rich palette, dreamy impressionistic representation of sumptuous European interiors, creating a mood of serene elegance.

Internationally recognised, he was exhibited in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1893, and also studied at the Academy of Dusseldorf, working there in early 1900s, up until his death in 1933 in that city. You will find a more complete biography if you look at a copy of Bénézit édit Gründ 1999, vol 14, page 199.
