Description

We are offering for sale a pair of oil paintings by the artist Tom Seymour.
-
These extremely well painted Waterfall pictures are unique indeed they would make perfect interior design pieces for their unusual diamentions work well in that the vertical height enhances the visual effect of cascading water pouring down over the rocks and through the valley gorge.
-
ARTISTS SIGNATURE
Tom Seymour has signed the left hand painting in the lower left hand corner and the right hand one in the right.
-
The paintings depict streams swelled by either snow or rain, tumbling down from the high mountains over rocky cliffs and through various waterfalls, creating misty spray.
These are tall, narrow paintings that the artist has used to great effect and has achieved a great sense of distance.

THOMAS SEYMOUR, (Tom)
Obviously found a ready market for his work without the need to exhibit, because we have found no reference to him in any of the art reference books, which draw their information from exhibition listings. He specialised in landscape and coastal works, the landscape mostly scenes in Scotland and North Wales. As we have found no reference to a person of this name so far, nor have we been able to find a Tom or Thomas Seymour, whose birth and death dates or Census records correspond to the 1844-1904 commonly given to this artist on the auction sites, it is very likely that it is a pseudonym, a common practice among artists of this period. We are, therefore, henceforth describing his as 19th Century British.
However, his work comes to the market quite often, as proven by the 151 auction listings on artprice.com, 74 on findartinfo.com, 54 on arcadja.com and many examples on artnet.com. A 30" x 20" painting made £900 at Tennants in North Yorkshire in 2005, a pair of 24" x 16" made £2,600 also at Tennants in 2004 and 6 of his oils were sold in Copenhagan in 2003, the highest realising £1,400. In 2007, a 24" x 16" made £750. His record price for an oil was £5,400 at Christie's in 2005.
-
The paintings are glazed and framed in 1 1/2" ornate gilt frames and slips, which suit them well and are probably original. They will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

CONDITION
The painting on the left is in very good condition, clean, rebacked and revarnished, with only a fine crack to the paper surface of the card, which is virtually invisible. The painting on the right has had considerable restoration in the distant past as there has been cracking to the card, which had been rebacked and the painting restored. It has been cleaned and revarnished. The paintings have been priced accordingly, although on the wall they look very good, with the restoration to the one only visible when the light falls at a certain angle. The frames are in very good condition consistent with age.
