The French were sighted on 18th February 1800 and HMS Success. which was a 32 gun frigate of the British Navy launched in 1781, sighted the much larger Genereux and engaged her.

Although badly damaged herself, Success succeeded in damaging the Genereux and mortally wounding the commander Contre-amiral Perree, delaying the Genereux until the arrival of the remaining British ships.
