Description

Description:
We are delighted to offer for sale this large and lovely oil painting on canvas by the Yorkshire artist David Motley, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a swollen burn, cascading down from the mountains, under a small bridge and becoming a waterfall, falling steeply into a rocky pool, with a mountainous backdrop. The artist has completely captured the falling water and spray in an almost photographic manner. Although we do not know the location, it is likely that it is in Scotland, a favourite subject for the artist.
-
DAVID MOTLEY Was born near Leeds in Yorkshire in 1848 and there is little information about his early life, other than that he was still living in Leeds in 1861. In 1872 he married his wife Annie, by whom he had a daughter Annie, born 1874 who became an artist and, in 1878 a son David Wilton Motley (1878-1947) who also became an artist (2 of his paintings are in the National Collection see BBC - Your Paintings under Wilton Motley). By 1881, the family were living at 126 Corbridge Street, Byker, Newcastle on Tyne, where the children were born, but had moved to Blackpool by 1891. In 1900, his wife Annie died but he and the two children were living at 69 Montgomerie Street, Glasgow. We can find no record of his death, but judging by newspaper articles, it was after 1921.
-
This is a quote from the Aberdeen Journal 9th December 1902. "Reid's Auction Rooms A collection of oils and watercolours by Mr. David Motley and his daughter Miss Annie Motley. Well known as an artist in the South and West of Scotland. When he was in Oban, he was commissioned to paint six panels in the officers' messroom of HMS Raleigh. His principal subjects are in Arran, Skye and Dumbartonshire.
-
He exhibited in York in 1884 and at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1898. There is one of his paintings in the National Collection, at The Dock Museum in Barrow in Furness. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club).
