..................................................................................................
We are offering for sale this lovely pastel and goauche portrait by the artist Wolfgang Craig Hainisch, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner.
>
The portrait depicts a lady in her later years, with a very kind face and wonderful blue eyes. She is wearing a sea-green dress with a fur coat over it and has on a pearl necklace and pearl drop earrings.
>
HISTORY
According to the previous history and provenance,it is purported to be a portrait of Scottish socialite Mrs.Moncrieff (b1874-d1961)wife of industrial glass maker John Moncrieff from Perthshire.
>
Glass was made at the Moncrieff glassworks in Perthshire, by an emigré Spanish family, from a range of glass known as “Monart”, which over the intervening years has become much more widely recognised and far more sought after.
>
The first experimental piece of Monart was made c.1923 by glassworker Salvador Ysart. Encouraged by Mrs Isabel Moncrieff, wife of glassworks owner John, and named after "Mon" from Moncrieff and “art” from Ysart, production began soon after.
>
Subsequently helped by Salvador's sons Paul, Vincent, Augustine and Antoine, it continued until 1961 – albeit interrupted by the war and, from 1946, without Salvador and two of his sons, who left to make their own and similar “Vasart” glass.
>
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Wolfgang Craig Hainisch was born in Austria on 27th September 1905.
How he came to England is not known, although it is variously stated on the internet that he was a Prisoner of War in WWI.
>
This would not make sense, however, as he would have been too young to have seen service in the war.
>
It would be more realistic that he was interned, probably with his parents, as we have seen strong evidence that he was in a camp on the Isle of Man and there were two internment camps on the island during WWI.
>
His birth and death dates we have obtained from the Births, Marriages and Deaths records, which also show that he died in the Westminster district of London in 1995.
>
He was a society portrait painter in London during the 30s, 50s and 60s and it is said that he painted the King of Jordan, the Queen Mother of Jordan. He also painted the portrait of Madame Nordi, the famous ballet teacher.
>
There is one of his portraits in the National Collection, a portrait of Lady Barrett, which is in the collection of the Royal Free Hospital.
>
It is likely that many of his portraits are still in private hands, but there are a few auction results for them, including a pastel of a woman jockey.
>
FRAME
The pastel is glazed and is framed in a ornate decorative 3" ornate swept gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
