We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the renowned artist HENRY ROBINSON HALL, who has signed the painting H. R. Hall in the lower left hand corner and inscribed it verso as follows - "Highland Cattle" Fording a Stream, Glenfinlas, Perthshire, N.B. H. R.Hall. The painting depicts a grouup of horned, shaggy Highland Cattle fording a stream, with another group approaching the stream along a track.. There is a large amount of mist rolling down the mountains in the background.

Glen Finglas, to give it its proper name, is a glen in the Trossachs, to the east of Loch Katrine, with a large area of forest now managed by The Woodlands Trust.
>
Henry Robinson Hall, 1859-1927, was a painter in oils and watercolours, noted for his paintings of Highland Cattle. This is one of a pair of oils by this artist that we are currently listing.
>
Henry Robinson Hall, was born to Eliza Robinson and registered as Henry Robinson in York in 1859. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in August 1867, hence the change of surname. He subsequently moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, where he was involved in the artistic community However, he moved to Flyde in Lancashire by 1885, where he married his wife Mary Annie Bleasdale, later residing in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he ran an artist's supply shop and cafe, as well as a studio for his painting. He died on the 31st May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews, Coniston. There is a picture of his gravestone on wikipedia.

There are 7 of his paintings in the National Collection and can be viewed at the Atkinson Art Gallery, 2 at the Oldham Art Gallery, 2 at the Dock Museum, 1 at the Lakeland Arts Trust and 1 at the Rossendale Museum.

He exhibited from 1895-1903, 1 painting at the Royal Academy in 1903, 2 at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and 1 at the Royal Scottish Academy.

The painting is newly framed in an 3 1/2" ornate gilt frame and gilt slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
