Description

I am delighted to offer for sale this lovely sunrise oil painting on canvas by the artist George F. Buchanan, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1881.
>
He has also signed, dated and entitled the painting verso on the stretcher which states 'Castle Lovat Ross-Shire Autumn Morning' G. F. Buchanan 1881.
>
The painting depicts a very distant view of Castle Lovat overlooking a loch, with a river winding through the valley below.
The sun is rising turning the sky mauve and pink above the distant mountains.
This is a beautiful painting and the artist has captured the scene so well.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
There is very little known about this artist, although after considerable research, we have managed to ascertain that he was born in Portsmouth in 1820.
Although in the census in both 1851 and 1861, he was living in London, he married his Scottish wife Mary MacLatchie in Ayr in 1841, with whom he had three daughters. (Her surname is queried as it was spelt several different ways)
>
We also know that he lived in Glasgow in the 1840s as one of his daughters was born there. Some of the auction sites give his second name as Frederick, but we have been unable to confirm this.
>
However, after the 1861 record, where he was livng at 12 Queens Terrace, St. Pancras, London, there are no further census records.
>
As he exhibited between 1848 and 1864, one might think that he had died shortly after this date, but we have found several paintings dated in the 1880s.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and Suffolk Street, mostly Scottish landscapes in oils.
>
According to the Dictionary of Scottish Painters, there was a George F. Buchanan who flourished in the 1840s in Glasgow and painted landscapes and coastal scenes and another listing for a George F. Buchanan who lived in Edinburgh and painted scenes in the Highlands, Ayrshire and Argyllshire.
>
It is quite possible that he lived in Edinburgh as well, as the census is only recorded every ten years, but it is our contention that this is the same painter as the George F. Buchanan listed the the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, who states that he is a London painter, an address also given by Graves Dictionary of his exhibition history of first and last exhibitions in London i.e. 1848-1864.
>
There is no record of his death and both he, his wife and daughters do not appear in any more census records that we have found, but he must have died after the late 1880s.
>
There are 16 of his paintings in the National Collection of which 9 of these are in the Government Art Collection, 3 at the Nottingham City Museum and AG, 1 at Glagow Museum, 1 at the Victoria & Albert Museum, 1 at Rye AG and 1 with South Ayrshire Council.
>
His paintings fetch good prices, with the record in recent years being £5,200 for a large painting.
This example ticks all the boxes as it still retains the original frame,is signed and dated, together with the framers label still in good order verso, plus it is titled.
A collectable painting and good long term investment.
>

The painting is framed in its original 4" swept gilt frame and slip, which bears a label from an A. J. Nash, carver, gilder and frame maker of Havant, Hampshire.
