Description

We are delighted to offer for sale a rare large scale example of artwork by artist Moses Vanderbank, which superbly depicts an early 18th century family group portrait, being inscribed and dated lower centre margin " M.Vanderbank Pinxt 1733 "
DESCRIPTION
The three siblings are shown with the young lady resting her arm on a plynth to her right side, which was the accepted symbol of the sitter being a lady, being symbolic and signifying the architecture of a large house and estate.
The young boy stands in a straight backed pose holding hands and wearing a serious expression, this being considered the correct way for a young gentleman of wealth to present himself to the world.
This fine portrait painting is a textbook example of early-mid 18th century British portraiture.
The other older young boy or brother sits on the grass holding an abandomed birds nest in his lap which still holds a young bird seen safely nestled warmly inside with feathers roughened on top of the straw. The boy is about to take his younger brothers outstretched hand in readiness to stand,a sign of a strong family union and loyal standing.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Moses Vanderbank who was probably of Dutch extraction, was the younger brother of the famous celebrated portraitist John Vanderbank (b1694-d1739)
The Family Group is very much in the style of his elder brother John Vanderbank, especially the rubbed highlights and the treatment of the flesh tones,a rich pink suggesting a glowing skin radiating a charm and warmth, very much his brothers trademark.
Moses who was also a very accomplished painter, was a pupil of John's and followed his manner very well.
John nearly always signed and dated his paintings, and it seems Moses was also influenced to do so as well.
There are only three other known rare surviving examples of Moses work, all being alterpieces in the 12th century church at Adel near Leeds.
Moses Vanderbank was even more improvident than his elder brother who was notorious for drunkenness and debt,as was said only intemperance prevented John from being the best portraitist of his generation.
Moses although said to be not as talented as his elder brother John, could also produce exceptional works full of charm and charactor and was clearly a very competant hand at producing large works in detail.
BROTHER JOHN VANDERBANK.
John & Moses Vanderbank were both born in London into an artistic family at the close of the seventeenth century.
Their father John Vanderbank Snr was a Huguenot tapestry weaver, born in Paris, but who was forced to flee to Holland before coming to England where he became head of a Soho tapestry weaving factory.
The sons of John Vanderbank Senior, the well known royal tapestry weaver, John Vanderbank studied painting first with his father and the portrait painter Jonathan Richardson.
He was one of Godfrey Kneller's earliest pupils at the Academy of Painting from 1711-1720.
