Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist JAMES EDWARD GRACE, who has initialled the painting J. E. G. in the lower left hand corner.
The painting depicts a canal or small river, with a lock keepers cottage to the right hand side and the lock gate in the centre.
There is a lady sitting on the wall to the left of the lock and the lock keeper to the right.
JAMES EDWARD GRACE RBA B1851-D1908
Was a landscape painter, in both oil and watercolour and a book illustrator.
He studied at the Liverpool Institute from the age of sixteen years and then at the Royal College of Art.
He exhibited at Suffolk Street from 1871, at the Royal Academy from 1876 and was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879.
In the early 1870s he was living in Wakefield, but by 1880 he was living at Milford in Surrey and Bedford Park, London in 1898.
He married Mary, nee Haldane, who was also an exhibited landscape painter. He died on the 5th March 1908.

His work is often listed in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. An oil painting entitled 'A Still Pool in the Vale of the Lledr, North Wales' achieved £1,100 in 2003 at Christies. His record price, as far as we can ascertain is £2,400. There are three paintings currently for sale in galleries in excess of £1,000.
The painting is framed in a 2 1/2" swept gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.

Excellent quality crafted frame in wood with moulded plaster gilt finish.

CONDITION
Very good. The canvas has been relined relatively recently.
There is no craquelure or missing paint.
The frame is in very good condition.
